5 Ad Mistakes Local Business Owners Make (And How to Fix Them)

I am SO excited about this post, because it's long overdue. I recently sat down with one of the ad managers on my team, my right-hand girl and co-coach inside Hometown Advantage, Melissa — and if you've been in the membership, you've probably already talked to her and gotten some incredible advice. If you haven't met her yet, let me introduce you.

Melissa found her way to me a couple of years ago right after she had her son, Maxton. She was looking for a way to use her marketing skills while staying home with him more, came across one of my ads (surprise, surprise), started following along, and eventually emailed me asking how to get started. She joined the program, hopped on her first coaching call, and within a week or two we were working together. I love that story every single time.

These days, Melissa spends her time deep in ad accounts, reviewing data for our Done For You clients, answering questions in our Circle community, and creating ads day in and day out. Which means she has seen A LOT of ads — and she's gotten really, really good at spotting exactly where people go wrong. So I asked her to share the biggest, most common mistakes she sees local business owners make with their ads. Here's what she told me.

1. You're not mentioning your location

This one seems so obvious, but it's the one people forget the most. When you're writing your ad copy or opening your reel, mention where you live. Right away. If someone sees their own city in your ad, they immediately pay attention — it's an instant signal of "this is for me."

Melissa gave a great example: a candle-making business (think girls' night, make-your-own-candles kind of place) had opened their reel with "Every night should be girls' night." Sweet, but way too broad — it could be for anyone, anywhere. We changed it to: "POV, you plan the perfect girls' night in Charlotte." Suddenly it's speaking directly to the person it's meant for.

Here's the thing — when you're marketing to the masses, being relevant is hard. You've got so much competition and you have to work to dial it in. But as a local business, you have this built-in advantage: just add the name of your town, and boom, you've created instant relevance. Don't skip it.

2. You're being too vague

A lot of us try to sound clever or different, and in doing so, we lose clarity. What actually cuts through the noise is being crystal clear about what you do and what you want people to do next.

What's the goal of your ad? Booking a consult? Say that. Tell them what the consult includes. And please — don't give a confusing call to action like "DM me to learn more, and also check out my website." Pick one clear action. Something like "Click the link to book your free in-home consult." Simple, direct, no guessing.

And if you're sitting there thinking "but I have so many offers, I can't just pick one" — I hear you, and yes, you probably do have a lot to offer. But when it comes to advertising, you win by picking one thing to start. Get it converting, then branch out. It'll save your mental energy and give you so much more clarity on what's actually working.

3. You're letting Meta sneak in "AI advantage" settings

If you've spent any time in Ads Manager, you know there are a lot of toggles. And Meta has gotten sneaky about quietly turning on AI Advantage-style settings — especially when you duplicate an ad set to add new creative.

One example: "related media." This setting will pull in other creatives from other campaigns and lump them into the same ad, which means you're no longer running just the one ad you meant to test — you're running a handful of them all mashed together. Your data gets muddy fast, and you have no real way to know what's actually working.

This has happened to Melissa herself — she thought one particular ad was crushing it, went in to study it, and realized there were ten different reels running under that single ad. No way to know which one deserved the credit. If you want real answers about what's working, keep your tests separate and double-check those settings every single time.

4. You're duplicating your copy across every section

Ads Manager gives you a few different spots for text — headline, description, primary text — and these are all real estate. Different real estate. So don't take the exact caption from your reel and paste it word-for-word into your primary text.

Think of it this way: you're already paying for the space, so use it. Say different things in different spots, speak to different parts of your audience, or at least say the same idea in a new way. And on the flip side — don't write such a short ad that people don't get enough context to know if you're relevant to them. It's a balance, but it's one worth getting right.

5. You're expecting ads to be the whole solution

This is the one I really want you to sit with. Ads are not the secret sauce — you are. Ads are the vehicle. We teach you the mechanics, the strategy, how to drive it. But you know your business and your audience better than anyone. Every conversation you have with a client or customer is giving you information you can use to build higher-converting ads.

And here's a truth about running a business: solving problems never actually stops. Even the people in our program who've mastered ads and cracked the lead-generation problem run right into new ones — not enough time, not enough staff. That's not a failure, that's growth. Being a good business owner is really just about how fast you can solve the next problem.
